Poe returned to Richmond in the summer of 1849 and rekindled his relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Elmira Royster Shelton. He also joined the Sons of Temperance and spoke of plans for marriage and a new future in Richmond. At the same time, he was working to establish his own literary journal, The Stylus.
In September, Poe left Richmond intending to travel north, apparently planning to stop in Philadelphia before continuing to New York. He reached Baltimore but then disappeared for several days. On October 3, he was found seriously ill and delirious outside a Baltimore polling place.

A Journey Shrouded in Mystery
After leaving Richmond in late September 1849, Poe traveled north with plans to stop in Philadelphia before continuing to New York. The last confirmed account of his whereabouts before October 3 is uncertain. That day, he was found in serious distress at Gunner’s Hall, a Baltimore tavern used as an election polling place, and was taken to Washington College Hospital.
Poe remained at the hospital for several days, at times unconscious or delirious. His physician later reported that Poe's answers to questions about what had happened were incoherent, leaving the circumstances of his final days unresolved. Poe died around October 7, 1849.
